Groin Strain Recovery: How to Heal and Return to Sport

A groin strain is a pull or tear of the inner thigh muscles. Learn the signs, recovery timeline, and how to heal and return to sport.

Understanding a Groin Strain

A groin strain is a pull or tear of the inner-thigh muscles, often called the adductors. It can develop suddenly during a sprint, change of direction, kick, or wide stance, or it can build gradually when training load outpaces recovery.

Pain with cutting, accelerating, kicking, getting in and out of a car, or squeezing the knees together can all be signs that the area needs attention.

Recovery Is More Than Waiting for Pain to Fade

A return-to-sport plan should restore strength, mobility, and confidence through the positions your sport requires. Pain may settle before the tissue is ready for sprinting, cutting, or full-speed kicking, so a structured progression matters.

  • Protect the area early while maintaining comfortable movement.
  • Rebuild adductor, hip, trunk, and single-leg strength progressively.
  • Add acceleration, change-of-direction, and sport-specific drills before full return.

Return Stronger, Not Just Sooner

At R3 Physio, we assess how the whole movement system contributes to your symptoms. That approach helps athletes and active adults make a more confident return to the activities they love.
